Cratchit is a newly written follow-up to 'A Christmas Carol'. I was tasked with creating the book cover design and some mockup images for promotional use.
As outlined in the brief, the Title Treatment needed to be clean and bold whilst reflecting the Scrooge-like protagonist. Using an existing Victorian-style typeface, I made some modifications to improve the flow of the lettering and better reflect the aspects of the Cratchit character. It was also important that the subheading paired well with the title treatment – for this I concentrated solely on uppercase serif fonts which were modern/clean but with a nod to the Victorian era.
For the cover design, the layout and details were inspired by the original book cover of A Christmas Carol, especially the use of gold type and the intricate detail of borders/flourishes.
I decided to go for a rich, festive green & gold colour scheme. The illustrations detail events in the novel and are complimented by symmetrical patterns and flourishes. The final design is certainly befitting of the Victorian era, but also striking enough to sit alongside any modern novel.
For promotional purposes, I created a series of mockups with the book situated in festive settings.
Cratchit is slated for release in Autumn 2024.
